Morgan Solar Energy Blinds Commissioned at Health Canada’s Laboratory Centre for Disease Control
Toronto, ON — Dec. 17, 2025 — Morgan Solar is proud to announce the commissioning of its largest Energy Blinds installation to date at Health Canada’s Laboratory Centre for Disease Control (LCDC) in Ottawa. The Energy Blinds are now operational across three façades of the LCDC facility, making this project a key milestone for solar-integrated retrofits in Canada’s public infrastructure.
This installation is more than a demonstration of scale. It is the result of a multi-year collaboration between Morgan Solar, Health Canada, Global Affairs Canada, and the Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) program. The project was delivered under ISC’s Testing Stream, which supports the real-world validation of Canadian innovations that advance clean energy, GHG reduction, and smart building performance in federal facilities.
The LCDC project includes capabilities for evaluating the Energy Blinds’ thermal performance, in addition to their electricity generation capabilities. The resulting data will be used to calibrate Morgan Solar’s performance models and support the business case for future Energy Blinds deployments in government and commercial buildings alike.
“We are proud to partner with Innovative Solutions Canada, Health Canada and Morgan Solar as part of our commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Morgan Solar's blinds offer an impressively sophisticated yet easy-to-use solution for controlling glare, managing thermal impact and making use of solar energy at the window level. We are eager to see the results of this test and hope to inspire more government departments to consider incorporating sustainable technologies in their own buildings.”

The LCDC project is Morgan Solar’s third collaboration with the Government of Canada under the ISC program. Energy Blinds were initially developed through ISC’s Energy Producing Window Coverings challenge launched in 2020 and renewed in 2022. These blinds replace conventional shades, providing solar power generation, dynamic glare control, and thermal management in one integrated product.
“Achieving net-zero targets requires technologies that are both measurable and scalable,” said Hugo Navarro, COO of Morgan Solar. “We’re grateful to our federal partners for supporting this validation effort. Having the opportunity to validate technologies like this at scale helps innovators move from pilot to portfolio.”
As Canadian buildings adapt to new climate and energy performance standards, this installation shows how innovation in solar design can be seamlessly woven into public health infrastructure. The data and insights generated at LCDC will inform retrofits across a broad range of building types, helping to unlock the potential of windows as active contributors to a building’s energy strategy.
