Solar as Public Art: Morgan Solar & TPL Light Up Sustainability

Toronto, ON — Oct. 30, 2025This isn’t what most people picture when they think of solar. With hundreds of angled glass louvres and more than 30,000 LEDs, Morgan Solar’s latest project looks more like art than solar power. Installed at Toronto’s Bridlewood Library, this new solar awning serves as a solar power array, a shade structure, and most importantly, a beautiful new community landmark.

Developed by Morgan Solar Inc., the Bridlewood Library SPOTlight installation is a showcase of what solar can look like when aesthetics are at the core of design, not an afterthought. The project spans the library’s front façade and outdoor reading deck with a system that generates clean energy, improves indoor comfort, and strengthens the building’s visual identity by day and night.

“During public consultations, people repeatedly raised the need for more visible community landmarks,” said a Toronto Public Library representative. “We needed an awning for shade, we wanted solar in the design and everyone loves the lightshow.”

The system includes 423 pairs of custom photovoltaic panel louvres and optical LED louvres. The array generates electricity while providing shade and thermal comfort for library staff and patrons. At night, more than 30,000 programmable LED lights turn the installation into an illuminated community landmark.

The installation is powered by Morgan Solar’s proprietary SPOTlight Louvers technology, designed specifically for visible, design-forward applications. These louvers provide all the core benefits of a solar array, energy generation, daylight modulation, HVAC savings, but do so in a way that supports architectural intent.

“This project is an amazing demonstration of what’s possible with solar.” said Nicolas Morgan, VP of Business Development at Morgan Solar. “This is solar that isn’t hidden on the rooftop. It belongs out front as part of the architecture, making a statement about design, sustainability, and civic pride.”

The project was commissioned by Toronto Public Library, and the building design was led by Mainstreet Studios and Ken Fukushima Architecture. The solar array was designed and delivered by Morgan Solar, and joins a growing portfolio of architectural solar projects that includes the Ontario Association of Architects headquarters and partnerships with BGIS, BMO, and Cisco.

Bridlewood is just one expression of what’s possible. Morgan Solar’s SPOTlight Louvers are not a fixed product, but a flexible architectural platform that can adapt to different visions, goals and aesthetics. For architects, developers, and civic leaders looking to create standout climate-
forward buildings, this is an invitation to treat solar as a design element, not just a utility upgrade.
